'Local pick-up only' ignored by buyer!

4/11/2009 12:09
Hi,

Can anyone help me? I'm going around in circles with Ebay. Someone from another state won my auction, despite the fact that it was clearly stated in the listing that it was 'Local pick-up only'. They now think I should just post the item anyway. I haven't asked for any payment, and they haven't paid me. I have tried to explain to the buyer that I won't post the item [it is large and bulky - which is why I chose 'local pick-up' in the first place], but the buyer has suggested that: (A) I should just ship it anyway. & (B) It can't have been clearly listed or they wouldn't have bid in the first place.

I think this is very unfair, especially as I declined other requests to ship the item, from other potential buyers, PRIOR to the auction ending. Ebay seem to be suggesting that it is completely up to me to negotiate with the buyer. Can't the transaction just be cancelled? If the buyer was ineligible to bid, then surely the sale is not valid. Then what about feedback? Can the buyer leave me negative feedback out of spite?

Can't the transaction just be cancelled?Yes-you can ask for Mutual Cancellation or open non payer dispute

If the buyer was ineligible to bid, then surely the sale is not valid. No,buyer bid as there was nothing to stop them apart from apparent stupidity if your listing was very clear about local pickup only.

Yes,unfortunately.

I'm cringing at suggesting this but have you tried pulling their contact details? You could try ringing them, being sickenly nice & just basically pleading your case that its not possible to post-I know this idea probably sucks but its worth a shot if you have reasonably decent phone manner & oodles of patience.

The first think I would do is block the buyer. You don't want them making more careless bids.

Then I would cancel the transaction:

Cancelling a transaction

Don't try to make someone pay, if they don't want to pay.

Then see if you can offer it as a Second Chance Offer.

Thanks so much for the advice! The whole system seems incomprehensible to me - I've done everything the way I'm supposed to, yet the person who has done the wrong thing has all the power!!

Don't ask for mutual cancellation, if they refuse you have lost your FVF refund.

Ring or go on line and get a quote for packaging and delivering the package by a fully on line trackable method, add on 50% then send them a revised invoice with delivery.

If they pay it then it will be worth your while to send it, if you use Pack and Send you can leave the wrapping to them, and if they don't then you can open an unpaid item dispute and unless they pay you get your FVF back and they get a strike.

phorum_junkie is totally correct.

Get a post quote from the post office and your time since this was a pick up and send invoice. This will be only way to ensure they get marked as a non paying ebayer, or else ill have a longggggggg drive to come collect.

You could to make things easier, send a quote for $70 and say of a little less you will refund the difference.

Amazing how people don't read the details. Maybe put in the first line of your item description pickup only from *** (where-ever you live)
and to be safe again at the bottem!

That's a good idea! Just never realised that you'd have to go to such extreme measures when 'Local Pick-up Only' is scattered about all over the listing - must be at least 5 times! Thanks for the tip!!

As a buyer I saw straight away the item was pickup only. But I guess you have to cater for all types of buyers. And from experience the item description is something most buyers read (No Guarantees however haha !!! (some buyers don't have a clue or just push the limits))
So although redundant I will add things the buyer really needs to know in the item description

The trouble is that some people look at the title and the picture and then bid/buy.

They just don't bother to look at anything else and fail to understand that what they have done is both irresponsible and unsafe.

Just get a quote from Pack & Send, add the 50% and re invoice them.

'Local Pick-up Only' was in the description too! In fact I counted 'Local Pick-up Only' at least 5 times within the listing. It's either stupidity or as you say, pushing the limits, and trying to bully the seller. Trouble is, there doesn't seem to be any protection, or back-up from Ebay - so consequently there's no deterrent! Anyway, thank you to all of you who have responded - I really appreciate the feedback!!
