What about buying perfumes from overseas? I tried to post some to Austria to my daughter and was told by the P.O. here in Oz that I was not allowed to...so how can I buy perfume from U.S.A. and... do they charge import duty?...anyone??

You can buy perfume from anywhere if the seller has the appropriate certificates in place.

No import duty under a certain amount. I think $1,000 but could be two.

Someone else will confirm.

If you want to send your daughter perfume, you will have to gain a certificate from Aus. post.

Or, you can buy perfume from a bona fide seller, change your paypal address to gift address, and ask the seller to forward to your daughter. That is, if they want to post to Austria.

Always ask the seller the question, before you purchase.

you can refer to the Australia Post on line site and download their Dangerous Goods items lists.

as a private individual you CANNOT mail perfume anywhere by Air, and only by road within australia with a permit.

$1000 is corrent regarding customs duty, but as perfume is flamable it cannot be sent Air.

You should not use a Paypal gift address under these circumstances and there is no reason why, if the seller posts overseas and you follow the correct procedure, you can't get it posted to anywhere in the world.

First make sure that the seller posts overseas then after you buy you need to change the delivery address in ebay checkout when you go to make payment then that is the only address that will appear on the seller's Paypal transaction page.

I kniw this works as I have just changed my delivery address on this account to here in Australia even though this account is registered in the UK and was showing my UK address untik I changed it.

Only a small minority of "old style" perfumes are classified as dangerous goods and cannot be sent by mail - if the perfume has a red diamond with "flammable 3" on the packaging you cannot mail it. To double check you can download a safety data sheet for the perfume from the manufacturer which will state whether its a classified dangerous good.

For marketing reasons (who wants to squirt themselves with a dangerous good) the use of alcohol has declined (ceased?) and specialist non dangerous odour carrying solvents are used.

Any non dangerous liquid can be mailed as long as its packaged correctly - Auspost sell packaging for liquids.

Auspost know that they have got incorrect information on their website about perfumes - but have suckered too many sellers into dangerous goods accounts to put up correct information.

incorrect information or not, dont matter, fact is Aust Post made a ruling, and Aust Post stick to their ruling.
so, no perfume, nail polish or other such goods without an aust post license.
