Yep Freddie. When I was a kid we lived in some interesting houses with interesting colours and such.... now my mother lives in a very nice house and so does my dad... Gen Y and some Gen X see their parents living in nice places and forget their parents have been paying off dodgy houses for 20 years or so before they got the nice house.

sounds like you've done your sums and are being sensible about it with your emergency fund etc.

mortgage repayments usually end up cheaper than paying rent so in a few years time you will probably find that you will be able to start fixing things up - or move on and rent it out, starting you property empire :-D

I grew up with lino also :)

Just remembered, this house had the brown 'tiled' look lino through the family room and kitchen when we first bought it :)

I have to say it was easier to keep clean than what I have now :(

Actually, speaking of this sort of thing, a friend who lives up the coast wanted to get rid of carpet, that was contstantly covered in sand.

She wanted floating floors, but the house is old and uneven, so she went for the floating floors lino and it looks fantastic and so much easier to maintain.

went through a house last weekend, and it was a dump, looked nice on the outside though.

I walked in and it was carpeted all the way through, and it made me realise I do like my floorboards here.

Froot if you can find a house that just needs aesthetics done, go for it! Seriously, even if you're just painting wall by wall every couple of weeks, eventually it will be done. A kitchen make over isn't that hard. Paint the cupboard doors and there is an instant change. And so on and so forth.

But I could be biased because my ideal first house is one that requires a sledge hammer over a polishing rag ;) But then I find the thought that I can walk into a dump, turn it into my Taj Mahal with some elbow grease and (hard) work somewhat appealing; I like the idea of making my house my home.

I don't know about that!

My sister had the same little square tiles I was talking about earlier, but in blue and they were her benchtop in her last house :^O

I'm personally more a fan of the sky blue/lemon kitchen colour scheme.

Yes, I keep telling everybody I was born 50 years too late :|
