Our first house had that and lots of wallpaper :_|

In the end, it was easier to leave the panels there, because we tried to pull it off, and half the walls came off with it.

Oh you can't beat the orange or lime green laminex cupboard tops Don't laugh, I used to have them. LOL. Actually orange tops and green tiles.:^O

Debt, daunting at first but once you have bought and sorted it all out and living in the house that feeling passes.
Renting, no debt as such but at the mercy of the owner and the rents going up.

Hi Froot - here's my opinion. When I bought this little house I'm in now, it needed EVERYTHING fixed up. I was a single parent with a 7 month old and, luckily, fantastic parents.

Description of house:
Run down shack
Needed new roof
Great new shed
Nearly everything was brown inside - brown vinly, brown walls and casino swirly blue carpet in the main bedroom
It was UGLY and it stunk of cigarette smoke

Anyway, first thing I did after cleaning every surface, was get some carpet from my sister's mother-in-law, who just happened to be replacing her perfectly good carpet. Cut that to size to put in the 2 bedrooms and lounge area. Then I painted my little girls room. Things were looking better already.

When mum and dad came on their next visit, I'd painted my bedroom and dad helped paint the rest of the house.

Over the years, we've improved just about everything except the kitchen - that's on the plans for next year once I've saved the money.

Thanks to Cyclone Larry and my wonderful insurance company, I got a brand spanking new roof - which worked out fantastically, because that was my major worry with buying this house. Everything else I knew I could fix.

Anyway, to cut a long story short - all can be done in time, with saving and planning. Everything doesn't have to be done at once.

If it's liveable for the time being, has a great big storage area for all your books and you know you can get renovations done cheaply (ie, with help from the family), then go for it. There is nothing like owning your own piece of Australia.

Carl those duck's on the wall our now highly collectable, they go for a hefty price on ebay.

Our bathroom had the gas heater you had to light to heat the water up - I prayed each time I had to light that damn heater, I knew it would cause my death one day.

We had lovely orange cannisters to go with the lovely orange laminex bench tops. How trendy was that?

I have never met a rental in my price range that had anything close to a reasonable bathroom or kitchen.

Buy it! Even if all you do is paint over the nasty wall paper or what ever it's still better than a rented hovel with a landlord who is actually precious about said nasty wallpaper!

LOL That's for sure!

I know when I was a renter I was more particular about things but as a home owner I'm not. I DETESTED my kitchen when I was renting this place, especially the lino but I've owned it for 6 years and only painted it and put new handles on it. I wanted new floor coverings but resisted the urge to spend 1k and have spent money on other things instead.

So long as it is usable you'll be right. Don't listen to your sister, I guess she is already a home owner? If she went looking of course she'd expect a nice kitchen and bathroom, I would now too but going from renting to owning, especially with a low budget you don't really have much choice than to watch your pennies by buying a house that needs a bit doing to it.

If you wait until you can afford something with nice kitchen and bathroom you'll get priced out of the market. At least with a starter you'll get some equity back after about 5 years.

Froot I've brought this place on a limited income. Admittedly I did have equality and a good deposit. It needs a new roof bathroom. Had to block in the old fire place. Needs painting everything needs fixing but its all part of the challenge I couldn't be happier now we have the place.

Basically the only thing going for it is the kitchen which is probably worth more than the house ROFL But in a few years time with its potential it'll be perfect.

It is far better for us to be paying a mortgage than it is to be renting. In fact I could not afford to rent anywhere reasonable certainly no there anyway. Most houses with a coat of paint and a good clean up can really look fab.

The rest u do as you go. The bottom line is it's your life, your choice, do the best you can do without over extending yourself.

Its true that your home is your castle! Anyway for the view I have I'd live in a shack!!! lol

Anything that will help you to attain assets is a good thing.

You will also have the security of knowing you can't be asked to leave and that is a huge thing especially when you have kids.

It's also nice to be able to put piccies up if you want to and have the color scheme you like... the list is endless of pluses.

As the others have said though...do your sums and ensure you can afford it before you buy.
Especially if interest rates rise again.

You need to factor those sorts of unforseen expenses into your budget.

Good luck with finding something!!:-x

Being on the bottom rung of the property ladder is far better than not being on the ladder at all.
