Upcoming Parts category changes

4/11/2009 11:43
Hello everyone,

At some point early in 2010 we will be changing and updating the category structure for the Car Parts & Accessories category on eBay Motors. We are considering making changes and we feel this would give both buyers and sellers a better eBay experience.

However, we’re computer people, not necessarily mechanics! We realize that anyone selling and buying parts & accessories on the site will usually know more about this product than we do. Therefore we would love to hear any and all constructive input on the upcoming changes.

If you are interested, please leave any comments on the changes on this thread. We will be having a live discussion on the changes on November 12, 2009 if you would like to attend. Details will follow.

You can download a copy of the proposed changes here

Note to avoid any misunderstanding:Category structure does not play any part in how Best Match returns search results, but it does have a large impact on how people filter their search results after the initial search.

Regards,
Scott

easy fix go back about 3 years it was spot on

.make and model is how car parts work before you find a part you need 2 know the make and model as just about all parts only fit a curtain make and model or models.

i am a car person not a computer person and the proposed changes dont make it any better

a holden bloke wont look at ford parts and a ford bloke wont look at jap parts and so on

you need to keep the computer stuff simple for us motor heads or if its to hard we go back to our garages and get our hands dirty playn with our toys

scott good luck you have a job ahead of you and i hope you can fix it

Goodonya Scott.
There has been alot of contention over the changes in the past but as has been stated "make, model and year" is the way all parts are sorted in the motoring game..
One more thing.
Can you try and get the spam listing out of the search.
Multiple listings of the same items is annoying but belt buckles,t-shirts,key rings, hats etc in a parts accessories section is down right frustrating.
These items are merchandise not parts and accessories

If ebay made it mandatory that when a part was listed that the second hand or new box MUST be checked or the listing could not be uploaded it would be much much easier for prospective buyers to search for 2nd hand parts for older vehicles.
ie a search for ford and check used parts box only then ALL ford second hand parts could be found in one search. As it stands at the moment you have 3 categories new second hand or not available.

Many collector desirable second hand parts are listed by original genuine part number.
If an optional field was available during listing creation then buyers could search by part number.

This is possible at the moment using the advanced search feature including the body of the listing in the search but including an optional field and promoting the new search field would be far more buyer friendly

Unfortunately, you don't listen to our suggestions.

Ever since the motors section has been fiddled with, its useless. I don't even think of looking through there anymore, I only search by text, but then you encounter a heap of problems, like keyword spammers, etc.

One thing I think it totally ridiculous is, lets say, an item like a keyring, or seatcovers, mudflaps, etc, something that is common with Chinese Junk sellers. They have the option to tick the boxes and have it suit every car, so if I search Toyota, Ford, Holden or Aston Martin, their cheap crap $2 keyring will appear.

There needs to be some structure, or templates put in place.

I own a Toyota 4Runner. Parts for this vehicle can be listed as Fore Runner, 4 Runner, For Runner, or even Hi Lux or Hilux. So how do I search?

Parts need to be listed by make. That way, as said above, I can go into Holden, etc and search by used parts. I don't buy new parts off ebay, its not cost effective. I look for hard to find bits, or rare bits, or oddball bits.

I also think that there needs to be a section for cars that are registered and cars that are unregistered.

Another thing that I find stupid, and ass about as is typical with ebay, is this. I want to look for a XE Falcon, lets say. But not everyone knows what model car they own, so I go to cars, Ford, then try to search for cars 1990 and EARLIER. but I can't. I have to search 1990 and NEWER.

Why not break cars down by the decade? 2000's, 1990's, 1980's, etc?

Also, Classifieds and dealers are totally ruining the section, spamming over priced cars all through it. There needs to be a way to delete ALL dealers and all CLASSIFIEDS. Once again, its 'bass ackwards' you can opt to look at BIN's or Auctions, but not both. Typical.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the comments so far. One thing that I would like to make clear is that these changes will affect filtering after a search has been made, as well as sellers when they list their items.

These changes will not affect the overall search, which is a whole other issue that is being looked at.

If you are a buyer or looking for a part, the aspect that will be affected is the "Refine Search" column on the left hand side. We want to make the categories more specific so that people can quickly filter down to what they actually want.

Hopefully this will allow accurate filtering so that you can find the part you want, and 2barkingbeagles can avoid the $2 Aston Martin keyrings. :) If you have any questions on that filtering process or the proposed changes, please let me know.

Scott

I think the problem is that most people DONT WANT to search by keyword, they want to search by category. You don't seem to get that.

Its hard to explain to someone who, no disrespect, knows very little about cars.

If I want to buy new wheels for my 4Runner, There is NO WAY IN THIS WORLD that I would search for wheels on ebay. I would go senile before I could filter out the garbage i've no interest in. Then i'd still miss some.

This is what I should be able to do. Parts/Wheels-tires/4WD. Nope, not there.

That is also another issue I want to raise. 4WD. Parts can be listed as 4x4, 4 x 4, 4 by 4, 4wd, 4 w d, 4by, four wheel drive, etc.

Can it not be standardized? 4WD is the universally accepted way of abbreviating four wheel drive.

Another thing. You stupid search refining on the side. I have a lot of things I want to filter out. BUT every time I select a box, the page refreshes. So, I might want to select Used, Toyota, Australia Only, etc etc etc.

All in all, i'd rather have categories that WORK and are WELL STRUCTURED that I can browse though.

I was interested in Holden wb parts when I first joined ebay. I simply looked in holden hq-wb and wow the bits i was interested popped up. Then it all changed and I couldnt be bothered any more. List by make and model. Simple...cant be simpler can it?
I also check other categories and get so frustrated with featured items.4 and a half pages of featured items before you can actually see anything that is remotely of interest. I am not interested in the same cheap chinese junk listed over and over again. Give them there own category and call it new cheap crap that no one wants.
Just a thought.

I can only re-state that the hierarchy of searching needs to be make, model, year, part description.

I've given up trying to use the parts category for buying or selling since the changes about 2/3 years ago. The amount of non relevant items competing with relevant ones is just overwhelming. For sellers its become a waste of money advertising an item when it appears halfway down the third page after classified and featured ads.

Hi 2barkingbeagles,

I'm a bit confused by your statement of "no way in this world" to be able to search for Toyota 4Runner parts.

Try this:
For the Motors home page, click the Parts and Accessories tab, highlighting "parts and accessories".

A search result page will come up with all of the current parts on the site.

on the filter refining on the side:
click "Toyota", page will refresh pulling in all Toyota parts
click "4Runner"
click "Wheels & Tyres"

You have a search result page with all of the listings for wheels and tyres for Toyota 4Runners, and it took 4 clicks to get there. You can further refine as you want.

Sorry for the confusion, but the last step is the item we are asking for feedback on. The category structure will have the most impact on the buying experience there. We are looking to address the wider issue of matching all relevant listings to make/model/year/variant, and that should also be addressed next year.

Again, sorry for the confusion.

Regards,
Scott

But the problem is that those same 4runner wheels could have been listed under hilux or even landcruiser or 4wd or 4WD etc and have no mention of the make in the listing at all. The listing needs to be filtered when listed, not by the person looking. There are too many combinations for the same item in this case as the same wheels can fit several different vehicles.
It just gets more and more difficult and less and less usable by having to click four times and still miss what you are looking for.
This applies to lots of makes and models.
I think everyone is saying that your efforts are wasted trying to revive the beast, it is no good to start with.

Thanks fatnote,

We agree completely, and that is part of addressing the wider issue that I referred to. Unfortunately, the main issue as you said is fitment, being able to come up with relevant listings that will fit the make/model/year/variant that you have, but do not specifically state so in the listing.

For instance, if you were searching now for a spark plug leads for a Maloo, you would miss this: 400083674494 (there are hundreds of similar examples, and this is something that we know we need to fix).

We want to surface all of the relevant listings of original equipment manufacturer, performance parts, budget replacement parts, and salvage. With some parts having fitment in multiple makes/models/years it gets data intensive quickly.

In the flow for selling a part we do have a make filter, but it isn't mandatory. Some parts categories have good adoption (allowing you to find it easier) and some don't. We have found that if we require sellers to put all fitment through there down to make/model/year/variant it can take a lot of time. Usually, that means that past a certain time sellers get frustrated and leave, and the part isn't available to anyone.

The solution would be to use parts catalogues, to aggregate all of the parts that are sold in Australia (original equipment, performance, replacement, salvage, etc). If you are able to do that, you can return more relevant listings, and have search like what have been rolled out on the US Motors site:

Link

Unfortunately, there is not an easy source for all of that information in Australia in one place, which means it's slow going and a lot of work.

I hope that this has cleared up some aspects of the make/model dispute. What we are trying to do here is improve and update the filtering process on the buyer side. We know that it won't fix everything, but it will mesh with a make/model/year/variant search if and when we can get that up.

Again, sorry for the confusion on this thread around search vs. post-search filtering. Please believe me that if it was a simple solution, it would have been done already.

Regards,
Scott

Truly what prospective buyer would punch in that weirdo search instead of searching for for v8 gen 3 holden plug leads if they owned a later model maloo?
